A Letter to My Father
Hi, Mom and Dad.
Every day is a good and perfect Father’s Day for a dad who gave up his dreams to raise a family. He lived his life to be the best and an example for all. He consistently protected and cared for those close to him, day after day. You acknowledge that a humble spirit in Africa was a beneficial place to call home, and you gave up the past and heritage.
Then, at times, you forged an uneasy path among ruthless people who had few possessions. Yet you taught a brotherly love none understood for your fellows. You provided relief to both wild and tame animals, as well as to humankind. Even when apologies and circumstances withheld their identity from you, their kindness did not always persist. You taught that exemplary truth always prevails and triumphs.
You took the operative tools of a trade and taught ethos, pathos, and logos. That could withstand the ages. You administered discipline and moderation. You also explained the distinction between a need and a want, as well as their respective priorities. You watched over us, guiding our thoughts, nurturing our minds, correcting our speech, and teaching us to be mindful of our conduct. You walked beside us even when our actions testified to another alliance. You maintained a steady course and proved to be a supreme master.
The wind did not always favor smooth travels and a fair sail. Sometimes life was difficult and unfair, and choices were challenging. They weighed fully upon the mind. Yet, you maintained a steady course with charity at heart. Beside you through all calm and storm stood a pillar of strength. Your soulmate, your wife, is ever watchful, ever mindful. Ever caring, proving home defiantly is where you hang your hat. I am at a loss for words; my gratitude is boundless, and I can only humbly honor a great master. Thank you.
Son of Christos
A special thanks to my older brother, a tradesman. The son of a stonemason. He shared with me once, on one occasion, times spent with our father, mother, and sister. Over a meal, they talked. And related everyday life events into stories and parables, using symbols. Telling of perspective and lessons learned. As did his father before him.
Because we remember these things portrayed with greater ease through storytelling. It also helps to provoke a curious mind that needs to unravel its mystery. In their own time…..
